If you live in the city but still want to put up an anemometer, what is the best way to do it. Of course besides the obvious answer of "put it on the longest pole you can find!"
Thank-you
I would say if there are many buildings around you, then your best bet would be to put it on a flat roof surface. If you install it on a pointed roof the wind tends to bounce off the roof and therefore you will not get an accurate reading. If you do not have access to a flat roof surface, well then your last resort would be to install a large pole (I know you already said this), at least 15 feet above your house.
Currently mine is about 10 feet above the roof on a pole. My roof is peaked and I have no access to a flat roof. The station gives me a reading of 20km/h winds when the winds are actually about 40km/h. Maybe I am best to just figure out a formula as to how to relate my readings to the actual.
Nice idea this thread :)
A lot of members have their own stations. Perhaps those members can share some tips, a few photos of their installations and the like. I`m sure with Xmas just gone a few may have received some new equipment and looking for some setup help.

What kind of station do you have.?How do you know that it is actually 40km wind gusts, if the station says 20km?
My weather station is a Nexxtech Wireless Weather Station (from the source, formerly radio shack). I know that the winds are 40km/h because I visit the Manitoba Ag Weather Station's Website to compare my station to that one which is very accurate. Here is the address for the Manitoba Ag station (
MB AG Weather)

Now how close is this Manitoba AG station from your place. If it is not right beside your own station, it can not be said to have the same wind speed as yours. That is the only problem that I can see. Your best bet would to purchase a hand-held anemometer and measure the wind speed from your station. If it is measuring the same speed that your weather station measures, then you know it is accurate. If not, your anemometer is not reading properly. In this case I would either send it back, or invest in a new one.
The MB AG place is about 2-3km from my station. I know mine isn't either reading properly or it is blocked by too many trees. I check the MB AG station and its reading is at least twice as much as mine, sometimes more. I know something is wrong with mine but I don't know what exactly. I need to, as you said, by a hand-held anemometer or bring mine to a place where I know the reading should be accurate, if the station is working properly.

If you need a hand held anemometer, I have one that I will sell to you at the wholesale cost. If you are inetested, please let me know.
