The category 3 cyclone "Nargis" has killed an estimated 10,000 people in Burma, with thousands possibly hundreds of thousands missing or homeless

This region of Asia has been hit hard in recent times, especially after suffering from the great tsunami of a few years ago.
More reports coming out, but it`s hard to know what to believe with the Burmese authorities notorious for keeping things to themselves. BBC suggesting 10,000 or perhaps more may have perished.
Could be the worst weather related disaster in modern times.
I`m stunned with such a massive tragedy, the amount of media coverage has been poor. Jeez, the democratic contenders bickering has taken more coverage than this. I guess that`s the world we live in, especially in the west.
Picked up a bit on the radio tonight.
The storm crossed a populated low level area when it made landfall.
Most of the dwellings were light thatch roof types not really able to handle a wind day not alone a cat 3.
Then it went on to Rangoon and did a number there.
There are some political rumblings that because of the military Government a lot of the aid may not reach the ones that are in dire need of it. Which it probably in the hundreds of thousands.
It's certainly looking like the death toll may be very high considering the initial hit and weeks after.

I did not even know of this storm until I read about it on here. It was not on the regular news I hear daily on the radio , and some how I missed it through my other sources.
A terrible event ,......why is so much happening in that area these past couple of years !! Makes you wonder.

I did not hear it on the radio here either Ron. I had been listening to a couple of shortwave stations.
Usually when a large events like this takes place I will try to get information on shortwave and ham bands.
There is usually much better and accurate information than we get from the media here.
Just as a note, I'll link the 'Democratic Voice of Burma'. They have been getting video clips and photos from the cyclone.
Interesting site to browse around.

Thanks for the links . Looks to be a terrible tragedy.
A terrible tragedy indeed. CNN is reporting 41,000 missing in addition to the 22,000 dead, with up to a million homeless.
CNN is now saying up to 100,000 are feared dead! I saw some satellite before and after pictures on Daily Planet last night it was just incredible the amount of land that was inundated.
I wonder if anyone knows , or will know , the actual death count.
