Forecast Models:
| GFS:
The Global Forecast System (GFS) - The GFS is a global spectral model used primarily for aviation weather forecasts. The GFS provides guidance out to 384 hours at 00, 06, 12 and 18UTC. |
| ECMWF:
Contour plots from the European Center for Medium range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) forecast model. This model runs to 10 days (7 days public) and provides data at 24 hour intervals for sea level pressure, 850 mb winds and temperatures and 500 mb heights. These plots are generated once a day at approx 8:45 PM EST. |
| UKMET:
The UKMET has a resolution of 75 kilometers, which is better than the GFS resolution of 150 km. The model also gives forecasts for the entire northern hemisphere like the GFS. The UKMET is run twice a day |
| NAM:
The NAM model is a regional mesoscale model using enhanced terrain and improved parameterization of surface and precipitation processes. It produces forecasts out to 84 hours at 00, 06, 12 and 18UTC. |
| RUC:
The RUC is a hybrid sigma-isentropic analysis and forecast system. It utilizes a 3-hour, OI-based data assimilation cycle to produce 12-hour forecasts eight times per day. This is a 25-layer model with 60 km resolution. |
| RGEM: 00z Initialization | 12z Initialization
Short-range regional forecast model from Environment Canada. 48 hour forecast updated twice daily (00 UTC and 12 UTC). |
| GGEM: 00z Initialization | 12z Initialization
Medium-range global forecast model from Environment Canada. 144 hour forecast updated twice daily (00 UTC and 12 UTC). |

Good Info:
What is NWP?
NWP (numerical weather prediction) is the science of predicting the weather using "models" of the atmosphere through computational techniques. The ingesting of huge datasets and performing the complex calculations necessary require some of the worlds largest supercomputers. Detailed Info
Upper Level Heights:
925hPa = approximately 900m
850hPa = approximately 1.5km
700hPa = approximately 3km
500hPa = approximately 5.75km
400hPa = approximately 7.5km
300hPa = approximately 9.5km
250hPa = approximately 10.5km
